Reflection on the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord by Rev Fr Julian O Ekeh

THE PRESENTATION OF THE LORD, OUR PRESENTATION TO THE LORD

(Luke 2:22-40)

Today is the feast of the presentation of the Lord. It is celebrated forty days after Christmas.

In accordance with the Jewish tradition, it is the feast of purification. It was supposed to be the purification of the Mother of Jesus. But Jesus and indeed the entire Holy Family was presented. Jesus, the Holy One, the Holy Lord, and the Son of the Most High made Himself impure for our sake to present us all to God. He presents us as we are to make us as we should be.

His presentation was a thing of joy. His coming into the temple was a glorious event. It brought jubilation and freedom from tribulation. It brought God closer to the heart of man, as we saw in Simeon who took Jesus in his arms and blessed God. It brought fulfilment to long awaited and anticipated blessings.

Jesus presents us to the world as light to enlighten our world just as He was the light for the gentiles. He challenges us to purify our lives like gold and shine out like light to a dark world. When we do this, we are representing Him well and at the same time presenting ourselves like perfect offerings acceptable to God just as He was acceptable to God.

The important question we should ask ourselves today is: What are we presenting to God? Are we sincere in asking God to purify us or are we enjoying dwelling in evil?

LET US PRAY

We thank You Lord God on this feast of the presentation of Jesus Christ in the temple. We too are presented to You. Accept us and purify us. Make us light in the world to shine in goodness to the greater glory of your name, we ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen

God bless your day.

Happy feast day.

Happy World day for Consecrated Life
