Reflection on the Gospel of Saturday Week 4 by Rev Fr Julian O Ekeh

NO LEISURE IN TEACHING

(Mark 6:30-34)

There is no rest for the teacher until he succeeds in impacting the knowledge he intends to impact. The absence of a good teacher results to wallowing and wandering in emptiness.

Man needs rest. Even Jesus needed the rest with His disciples, but a lot of the unfinished works will not allow Him to rest. He can't rest while His people wallowed in ignorance. He can't rest seeing them like sheep without a shepherd.

Today, a good number of children lack home training, they lack proper parental guidance and upbringing. They are without the values they should get from their first teachers. They are indeed like sheep without shepherds.

The reason behind this is not farfetched. We have a lot of parents these days who need much rest, who do not have time for their children, who do not know the need of their children, who do not shepherd their children aright. They look for reasons to flee from the "disturbances" of their children. They enrol them on holidays lessons during the only time of the year they should have time to be with them. They only return at night when everyone must have retired or engrossed with phone pressing. Little wonder they wander about the way they do.

Are you worried about why our society is the way it is today? Those who should teach are sleeping. Some of them are put to a rest they never called for. They teachers are made to be on strikes. The government do not care about the state of education and enlightenment of the people. The law is not even exposed to the people, all they want is for the ignorant ones to offend and be jailed.

Jesus refuses to accept rest when things are going wrong. He instructs, He directs, and He leads aright. Why is it that our leaders today who are supposed to lead us with compassion, saving us from destruction prefer to watch us perish and enjoy it?

Let us embrace teaching with compassion, teaching our people to work before eating, to study in order to pass, to respect everyone as persons with dignity, to uphold the sanctity and sacredness of life and indeed to be Godfearing in our relationship and endeavours with people. Let us not rest and feel comfortable or give unnecessary excuses such as: He is now an adult, she is no longer a baby, she is still a baby, It is still early to teach him that, he will go to Church when he grows, he will learn to greet with time etc.

There is no compromise with regard to teaching virtues and values.

LET US PRAY

Oh God we have a lot to teach, we have a lot to be taught. But we are most of the time tired to teach and wearied to learn. We call upon you compassionate Lord to instil your holy zeal in us to teach well and be docile to learn. Shepherd us and help us to shepherd those in need of our direction through Christ our Lord. Amen

St Paul Miki and Companions, Pray for us.

God bless your Saturday ( 4th Week, Ordinary Time, Yr B)
