Reflection on the Gospel of Thursday of the 3rd Week of Advent by Rev Fr Julian O Ekeh

 JESUS: GOD AND MAN

(Matthew 1:1-17)

The genealogy of Jesus is narrated in the Gospel of today. The story which gives accounts of faithfulness and infidelity, of men obedient and disobedient, of rise and falls, wise and unwise, of humility and arrogance. The story is a story of history, a history of success and failures, a history of fame and shame, a history of glory and of sorry. It is indeed an interesting story.

The story is beautiful in that it outlined important names that contributed a branch in the family tree of the human family of Jesus.

The story is an invitation for us to do our quota today at our own level to present humanity to divinity. We are called upon to make our human family ready to welcome the special One who is to come from the Divine family of the Trinity. Let our humanness not be a barrier for us. Let our weaknesses and biological, social and psychological tendencies not make us lose sight of the spiritual.

Let's make every effort in our powers to blend the physical with the spiritual. In our humanness, let's cooperate with the spirit of God and actually enter into the real Spirit of the season.

Jesus in His Godhead releases His blessings upon us and brings salvation to humanity drowning in the ocean of depravity. Jesus Christ is also Man, who knows what we are passing through as humans, who understands our challenges, who has been tempted like us in every way, but did not sin. May we not sin nor allow our shortcomings to plunge us into corruption and crimes. Let us be good humans and make the face of the earth new through the advent of the new king.

Let us pray

The story of your intervention in human history is an amazing one O Lord. As we thank you for those whose instrumentality down through the ages made it possible for you to come to us, bless us with the  zeal to make you come to human history again and again. May your blessings locate your people through us. Make Christians conscious of preparing to receive you all the days of their lives especially through this holy season through Christ our Lord.

God bless your Thursday (December 17)
