Reflection on the Gospel of Wednesday of the 2nd Week of Advent by Rev Fr Julian O Ekeh

  JESUS SAID: COME TO ME…

(Matthew 11:28-30)

This season is a season we anticipate the coming of the Messiah. Advent is all about waiting for a coming.

As we live in this expectation and join the Church to proclaim ‘Maranatha! Come Lord Jesus!’ Jesus invites us to come as well. This is a loving reciprocation. As we open our hearts to receive, Jesus opens His arms and heart to take us deeper in love with Him. We may have some difficulties going to Jesus, but He insists: do not shy away, come to me.

Come to me Jesus says with your worries and uncertainties about what lies ahead.

"Come to me" he beckons with the heavy weight of your sins, burdens, frequent falls and broken vows. "Come to me" with your tears, fears and pains. Oh, come to me with your restlessness and sleepless nights. "Come on to me" with the failures, mistakes, bad habits.

When you come to Jesus, He opens His arms and hearts to accept your shortcomings, to give you His grace. He takes your sins to give you forgiveness in return. He takes your sadness and gives you joy, He takes your anxiety and gives you rest. Oh, go to Him. You will not regret it Child of God.

As you go to Jesus be open to learn from Him. This is a period of learning. Learn new virtues. Relearn holiness, appreciate gentility. Be calm. Be humble. Be lowly. Do not be carried away by high expectations in the wrong direction. Go for those things that give rest to the soul and not those that satisfy mundane passions.

Come to Jesus, return from the far journey you made away from Christ. Come to your senses and tell yourself the truth about the empty promises of the devil which has only succeeded in giving you temporary joy and everlasting sorrows. See with the spiritual eye and take up the light and easy yoke that comes with Jesus Christ.

Let us pray

Oh Jesus, thank you for considering us in our unworthiness to receive your holy invitation. We are coming to you with our sins, burdens, sufferings and fears. We are coming to you with the family problems, state problems and Church issues.  Take these problems from us especially those that keep our eyes away from you. May we stay united to you now and for ever. Amen

God bless your Wednesday (Advent, Week 2)
