January 1, 2021
The Auxiliary Bishop of Owerri Archdiocese, Most Rev. Moses Chikwe, who was kidnapped alongside his driver on 27 December, 2020, has been released Friday, 1 January, 2021

The joyful news of the release of the bishop and his drive broke in the air around 10:00pm of the first day of the new year 2021.

In a statement signed by the Archbishop of Owerri Archdiocese and the Metropolitan of Owerri Ecclesiastical Province, Most Rev. Anthony J.V Obinna, Friday 1 January, 2021, the kidnappers released bishop Chikwe unhurt, though he looked weak from the traumatic experience. Meanwhile, the drive to the bishop, Mr. Ndubuisi Robert, sustained a deep cut on his hand and has been taken to hospital for treatment.

Archbishop Obinna acknowledged the efforts of the Imo State Government through the State Security Services, the Anti-Kidnapping Squad of the Nigerian Police and the Anambra State Government in the release of the auxiliary bishop.

In his statement, the Archbishop did not fail to thank God, Pope Francis, Apostolic Nuncio to Nigeria (Archbishop Antonio G. Filipazzi), Cardinals, Bishops, Priests, Religious and Laity for the role they played towards the release of the bishop and his driver.
